If you have know me for any length of time you would know that I care deeply about areas of justice. I truly believe the mandate given in Micah 6:8 to “Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God.” This desire to see justice done to those who are the oppressed or victims of injustice has been awakened due to the recent cyclone in Myanmar. According to the BBC this morning there is approx. 23,000 dead, and approx. 1.5 million at risk. They are at risk from cholera, malaria, starvation and death.
Why should we care and mostly, what is our response supposed to be? We should care because these people are children of God, created in His image to worship him, regardless of their religion. What should our response be? I believe our response should be that we have a response. Pray, give, go, call a group of friends together to gather money and buy mosquito nets to send, partner with a local organization, sign a petition to get the US or Canadian government Aid in there, do something. Today I have spent time putting myself in the shoes of the mother with the sick child, the father with the sick family, the little boy or girl who is scared and alone. My heart has been broken. Just as Jesus looked out over Jerusalem and wept we should weep and cry out to him for the care of His kids in Myanmar.
I know that this is not the most enjoyable post to read, but I feel strongly about this. It is easy for us to forget, it is easy for us to move on. Please do not feel guilty for living your life and being happy, but in that take time to remember the broken, the lost, the hungry, the orphan, the lonely and the dying (Matthew 25). To be honest I am still trying to figure out what my response should be to this. I do not want to forget and just move on, but I also don’t want to live in despair over every tragedy that comes. I pray Jesus that you give us wisdom. These are your children whom you created to do good works. Speak to us, move our hearts to compassion and action.
Thank you for taking the time to read this long post. If you have thoughts please let me know, I would love to here where you are at with this.
