joanjett-9.jpgI remember way back in 1990 when Mike Friesen and I were lined up at HMV, a music store in Winnipeg, to meet and get the autograph of Joan Jett. She was touring her Up Your Alley album and playing that evening. Mike and I were not going to be able to make the show as he worked that night, but we figured that we could at least go downtown and see Joan, who was at that time our musical goddess.

We were lined up for about 2 hours when we realized that there was no way we were going to be able to meet Joan, who was by then about 20 feet away, without Mike being late for work, so we left. I am not sure at what point in the night the call came, but Mike at some point called to apologize as he was mistaken on his work schedule and he was scheduled to work the next night instead. Shiv.

Fast forward 16 years to November 1, and there I am on 1st and Pike in Seattle scalping in to see Joan Jett on her Album/Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth tour. I was super excited and glad that I didn’t have to work that night. I remember buying a ticket for $10 and feeling silly that I had spent money on this show. Determined to get in for free or cheap I continued looking for tickets. I remember a few minutes before the show started this girl gave me her ticket. Wow, I was in but now I had two tickets and I was out $10.

I make it a habit not to sell tickets that I get for free so I decided to sell my $10 one. There was the African American dude that looked homeless and was about 55 years old. He told me that Joan was his favorite and was looking for a ticket into the show. Now I am not judging, but I didn’t thing that this dude looked like a big fan, but I took his word for it and sold him my $10 ticket for $5. Immediately he turned around and tried scalping it to someone else for $10, that’s the spirit.

Anyway, the show was great, Joan rocked and I was 3 rows from the front. It was a long time coming and I wish Mike was there with me, but unfortunately he was probably somewhere in Winnipeg working.

You continue to amaze me in your commitment to loving rock and roll and putting another dime in the juke box baby. Well, not many dimes…you keep getting the juke box to play for free! You’re the concert Fonz!!!
